Curriculum & Teachers

We provide an age appropriate curriculum that is designed to encompass the whole child: socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically.

Our day includes: – Circle time- ( calendar, phonics, stories, language development, number and letter recognition)

  • Music and movement- (large motor development activities)

  • Bible Story

  • Table time: pre-math skills, science, letter recognition, small motor development, or arts and crafts

  • Indoor and outdoor free play: We also work to develop social interaction, understanding others, and cooperation

  • Story time

  • show and tell

  • Fieldtrips: we go on monthly fieldtrips such as the pumpkin farm, fire station, train trip, pet store, etc.

Mrs. Kara Schroeder has been the Director and teacher at The Big Backyard since it opened it’s doors in 2009.  Miss Kara received her Degree in Education from Martin Luther College in 1997.  After graduating from college she taught 3rd-5th grades.  When she and her husband Chris started their family she decided to go back to school for Early childhood Education.  All her children attended cooperative preschools in Orange County.  She has served on the Orange County Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools and has worked at a preschool in Garden Grove before writing a grant to open The Big Backyard Preschool.  She is passionate about children and Early Education!  Miss Kara teachers the morning classes and Ready to Read Program at The Big Backyard Preschool.

Mrs. Becky Buth received her degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from Martin Luther College.  She spent 3 years teaching preschool in Madison, WI.  She then moved to CA in 2006 and was the Director and teacher at a nearby preschool in Garden Grove for 7 years.  Her family includes her husband Adam and three little boys! She is excited to teach at The Big Backyard as our Afternoon Pre-k teacher!
